Minor in Latin American & Hemispheric Studies

HIA sponsors a Minor for undergraduate students.

MINOR in Latin American and Hemispheric Studies

The minor in Latin American and Hemispheric Studies offers students the opportunity to explore connections through the Western Hemisphere from array of perspectives across multiple academic fields. The minor is sponsored by the Hemispheric Institute on the Americas (HIA), an interdisciplinary unit that focuses on regional societies and transnational processes in the Americas. HIA strives to redefine the study of Latin America from a broadly hemispheric viewpoint, while retaining an understanding of Latin America as an autonomous region with its own internal diversities.

We believe that traveling abroad is one of the best ways to expand your personal and cultural awareness, as well as broaden your knowledge of Latin American studies.  Come in and visit with us to learn more about how courses taken abroad can count towards your minor.

Advising is available in the H.I.A. office, 1277 Social Science and Humanities Building.

Mission

The Hemispheric Institute on the Americas is an interdisciplinary group bringing together faculty and graduate students that focus on the study of transnational processes in the American Hemisphere.

Our Goal includes promoting research to challenge the boundaries of disciplinary specialization and culture area studies, exploring the connections throughout the social, cultural, and economic landscape of the Western Hemisphere from an array of perspective and redirecting and redefining the study of Latin America from a broadly hemispheric viewpoint.
