How Latin America is Reckoning with its Violent Past: War Crime Trials in Peru and Guatemala
Jo-Marie Burt of George Mason University and Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) will provide an overview of political violence in Latin America during the Cold War period. She will talk about transitional justice as a response to past violence. Dr. Burt has published widely on political violence, human rights and transitional justice in Latin America for academic journals and media publications such as The Nation, Huffington Post, Al Jazeera and NACLA Report on the Americas. As a human rights activist and scholar, Dr. Burt has been involved in collaborative research and advocacy projects with human rights organizations seeking to ensure access to justice for victims of grave human rights violations.
A discussion of prosecutions in the region and focus on trials in Peru and Guatemala will follow.
