UC Davis has twenty-four Agreements of Cooperation with Iberian and Latin American Universities. These range from the social sciences to engineering and plant sciences. The Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, in particular, sponsors three "convenios" with Latin American universities for short-term faculty exchanges with la Universidad de Chile (Humanidades) and la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Professor Valenzuela also visited UC Davis as part of a faculty exchange between UC Davis’ Hemispheric Institute on the Americas and the History department of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Jaime Valenzuela Márquez is Chair and professor of History at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago. His doctoral work was completed at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris, 1998). Prof. Valenzuela specializes in colonial history, and, in particular, indigenous labor, migration, identity and integration in colonial Chile and the viceroyalty of Peru between the XVI and XVIII centuries. He has dozens of publications and coordinates a colonial history blog that can be found at
In April 2010 HIA hosted Professor Olaya Sanfuentes from PUC-Santiago for a one-week visit. The Chile convenios are highlights of frequent events about Chile, taking advantage of the extensive local community of Chilenos.
A convenio with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Perú operates under the same format of short-term faculty exchanges as the Chilean convenios. The UC Davis-PUC-Peru convenio completed a full cycle of reciprocal exchanges in 2009 with the visit of Rodolfo Cerrón Palomino of PUC-Peru to UC Davis in March 2009, and the visit of Stefano Varese of UC Davis, Native American Studies, to Lima, Peru in September 2009.
